I wanted to take the time to give out some useful info for taking care of yourself in between massage sessions. Your body can only be as good as the things you put into it.
When it comes to self care, there are a number of foundation principles of health that just cannot be ignored. There is no supplement, fancy gadget or magic pill that is better than the basics.
In today’s blog, I will give a quick talk about the first three ‘yin’ principles. These are probably the most important, but I will give an outline of the other three ‘yang’ principles in the next installment.
Nutrition: with all the dietary confusion out there, it’s not uncommon to hear conflicting information. The most important thing to note is that we are all unique in genetics and have unique capacities to handle each food that we ingest. To keep it very simple, keep it to wholefoods and organic if possible. Quality is number one and variety is quite important, eat with the seasons. If you couldn’t farm it, catch or hunt it, then don’t eat it. Have you ever seen doughnuts growing in the wild?
Hydration: Water is the only thing that we were really meant to consume. Anything else including tea, coffee, soft drinks, alcohol is not really necessary and will ultimately have an effect on your hormonal system and GI tract. Quality of water is important, consider getting a water filter to the best quality that you can afford. Aim to have 0.033 x body weight in kg. For example, a 100kg person would aim for 3.3L of water a day. This seems to be a good starting point, and the more you sweat during exercise, the more you would need. Many people often confuse hunger with thirst.
Sleep: Many people complain of poor quality sleep, and this can be quite a problem. Sleep is where we go into a deep repair and rest cycle, and where the immune system goes to work to help keep us functioning optimally. So we need to ensure approx 8hrs or so each night, Going to bed and waking at the same time each day is optimal. Aim to keep your room cool, dark, and free of EMF (phones, WIFI).
Hopefully you can incorporate some of these tips into your life. Remember aim to incorporate just one habit each week. For example, your focus for the first week may just be to drink your recommended amount of water each day. Then the next week, you can focus on a different habit. You might be suprised at the difficulty of some changes, but you may also be suprised how much your mental clarity, focus, movement, recovery and happiness improve. Your body will thank you when you start taking greater care of it more often.
